Adjudicator
Violinist Dr David Milsom is a performer-scholar based in Sheffield and a long-serving member of academic staff at the University of Huddersfield where between 2015 and 2019 he was Head of Performance. As a chamber musician, David has worked in modern and period instrument contexts, particularly in the area of ‘romantic’ performing practices, which is his academic specialism. From 2011, along with pianist Jonathan Gooing and performer-scholar Dr George Kennaway, he has performed with the Meiningen Ensemble, which has specialized in romantic performing practices. In 2024, David founded the West Riding Ensemble as a string-based chamber group bringing together experienced professional chamber musicians with gifted young students, one of whom, Maria Nikolaeva, has led a number of concerts under David’s guidance as training for a future as a professional performing musician. WRE brings together pedagogy and research: recent projects of note include a series of recordings and live performances of the Bach ‘Double’ concerto (including ground-breaking acoustic recording), pioneering performance-as-research (with David’s student at the forefront), forthcoming professional recording projects, and a forthcoming world premiere of a new concerto grosso with solo parts for David and Maria, to whom the work is dedicated.
