Cadzow Smith Award goes to Surrey student
Biomedical Engineering student Emma Wright has proved her exceptional potential by winning the coveted Cadzow Smith Award, which is awarded to just one final year student from across 11 universities in London and the Home Counties.

The Cadzow Smith Award is given by the 鈥 the charitable trust of the Worshipful Company of Engineers 鈥 to recognise a final year student who demonstrates not only academic excellence, but also professional awareness, leadership, self confidence and sound common sense.
As overall winner, Emma will be presented with a cheque for 拢2,500 along with a commemorative medal and certificate at the Awards鈥 Livery Dinner which will be held at the Plaisterers鈥 Hall or Institution of Engineering and Technology on 13 July.
Emma, who is in the fourth year of her MEng Biomedical Engineering degree, was nominated by Surrey鈥檚 Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and, having been shortlisted as one of six students across the 11 universities, was interviewed in front of a panel of Chartered Engineers.
She said: 鈥淚t was already such an honour to be the Faculty鈥檚 nominee, but to actually win was incredible, especially given the high calibre of the other candidates. I was ecstatic and initially quite overwhelmed. I鈥檓 grateful to have had the opportunity to demonstrate my potential and have recognition for my hard work and achievements. This is the perfect finale to what will be five years of study at Surrey.鈥
After she graduates from Surrey, Emma plans to pursue her passion for the field of medical devices 鈥 possibly in a dynamic R&D environment where she can apply her skills and knowledge.
鈥淭hrough my studies at Surrey and my Professional Training placement at DePuy Synthes (part of the Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies), I鈥檝e learned how to overcome new challenges and grown as an engineer and a professional. I鈥檓 looking forward to further contributing to an industry where the end goal is helping people to improve their lives and ensuring a continuum of care for patients.鈥 - Emma Wright
Charlotte Foreman, Director of Learning and Teaching for Mechanical Engineering Sciences, commented: 鈥淲e are delighted that Emma has been awarded with this prestigious prize. It is thoroughly well deserved and is recognition for Emma鈥檚 commitment, dedication and hard work throughout her time at Surrey.鈥
