CBE at Dalhousie University's Jean Monnet Centre in Canada
Thursday 20th March - Dalhousie University, Canada
On 20th March 2025, was delighted to participate in the commemorative Glyn Berry Lecture Series, hosted by her alma mater 's Jean Monnet European Union Centre of Excellence, and Centre for the Study of Security and Development, at the kind invitation of Professor Ruben Ziotti. This year’s theme was entitled ‘Canada, the European Union, and the Trump Challenge’, and I was honoured to share my thoughts on behalf of the 's on the EU-Canada-US development in foreign, security and defence terms, and in doing so, to be joined by Ross Hornby, former Canadian Ambassador to the European Union, and eminent political scientist Professor Oliver Schmidtke, from the Departments of History and Political Science, at University of Victoria. The discussion reviewed past, present and future formats of the EU’s relationship with Canada, with the panel presenting both detailed overviews of key areas of bilateral strength, and areas of tension, while looking ahead to geopolitical challenges arising from the war in Ukraine, trade and tariff disputes, the role of NATO, and much more. A deep privilege for a Dal alum, and an inspiration to continue to strengthen the work between our respective Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence.
