Surrey celebrates sustainable success at awards
The University’s annual Sustainability Awards took place on Thursday 2 April 2025 to recognise individuals and teams who have gone above and beyond to embed sustainable practices at the University and within the community.
Thirteen teams involved with Green Impact, a sustainable accreditation scheme open to staff from all departments, were awarded participation, bronze, silver, gold and platinum awards. FABSS: operations and facilities team (comprising of Michelle Rimmington, Lauren Haffenden and Sarah Walsh) achieved a Green Impact platinum award, and received the highest number of points out of all teams taking part in the scheme.
Ceremony highlights included the presentation of the University’s Special Awards, recognising individuals and teams making a significant sustainable difference to the University and the wider community. The Special Award winners were:
- Sustainability Hero: Rebecca Emery (GSA) – awarded to recognise Rebecca’s role in championing sustainable practices in production development at GSA.
- Highly commended: Emily Bushnell (International Engagement Office) - recognising Emily’s work to embed sustainability into international student placements.
- Sustainable Department of the year: Employability and Careers Team – awarded to recognise the team including sustainable practices within their operations, and their work to promote sustainable careers.
- Best Sustainable Project: Green Tech Jam (Stella Kazamia CSEE) – a sustainable hackathon that challenged Computer Science students to address real-world problems from local organisations.
Professor Bob Nichol, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean (FEPS) who is the Executive Board Lead for Sustainability said: “Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at the University. These awards highlight that we all have a role to play in not only supporting the University in achieving its sustainability targets, but also making a positive difference to our local and global community too.
