Surrey students win Royal Academy of Engineering scholarships
Two undergraduates from our Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences have won awards from the (RAE).

Pierre-Marie (left) and Ben (right) were identified as future sector leaders by the Royal Academy of Engineering
Founded in 1976, the same year that Concorde made its first commercial flight, the champions excellence in all fields of engineering. Its (ELS) support undergraduates in the UK who have the potential to become future industry leaders.
Successful applicants who secure ELS honours win a 拢5000 grant. This is used to help those individuals accelerate career and personal development objectives 鈥 and two Surrey students have claimed this prize in 2021.
Rigorous selection

Pierre-Marie is drawing up a plan for how he'll use his RAE scholarship award
"The selection process is quite rigorous," says Pierre-Marie Semichon, who arrived at the University in 2018 to study an MEng in Aerospace Engineering. 鈥淭he RAE interview panel want to hear what it is about you that makes you a good leader and examples that substantiate this.
鈥淲hen I applied, I mentioned all the things I felt made me a good candidate and I gave examples of situations where I鈥檝e displayed these positive attributes.鈥
And his strategy clearly worked.
Pierre-Marie continues: 鈥淚 received an email a few days after the interview. I was anxious to hear back because I鈥檇 put a fair bit of effort into this application.
鈥淚 was delighted to hear I鈥檇 been awarded a scholarship!
鈥淚鈥檓 not sure what I鈥檒l do with the funding yet. But, thanks to the amazing staff both in the engineering and careers departments, I鈥檓 drawing up a plan.鈥
Flying high

Ben, who also claimed honours at the 2018 Innovate Guildford Awards, is planning a career in the aerospace industry
The Department鈥檚 other winning applicant, Ben Luxmoore, already knows how he鈥檚 going to invest his award.
鈥淭he ELS is an opportunity to develop my leadership and engineering skills, and network with other aspirational and experienced engineers,鈥 says the MEng Mechanical Engineering student.
鈥淚鈥檇 like to continue to gain relevant experience by working on some small projects in my own time and go on some courses.鈥
High-flyer Ben seems certain his future career plans will be up in the air 鈥 literally.
鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to a career in industry, hopefully within the aerospace sector,鈥 he adds. 鈥淚 may spend time examining unmanned aerial vehicles 鈥 or UAVs as they鈥檙e known. I鈥檝e been working in this industry during my placement year and my spare time. I also led the Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Challenge team this year, designing, manufacturing and testing a fully autonomous fixed wing UAS.
鈥漈here are still a lot of developments to be made in this field. I鈥檇 like to be a part of the team who make this progress.鈥
Continued success

鈥淪urrey has a strong pedigree in securing these awards," says Senior Teaching Fellow Dr Mary Hilditch
Dr Mary Hilditch, a Senior Teaching Fellow in our Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences, is keen to praise the achievements of her students.
鈥淐ongratulations to Pierre-Marie and Ben for their success in this year鈥檚 competition,鈥 says Mary. 鈥淪urrey has a strong pedigree in securing these awards, with other recent winners James Smith, Cameron Huggins and Rachael Kerr all coming from our Department.
鈥淲e鈥檙e always keen to advertise these opportunities to students and celebrate their triumphs.鈥
