Careers with a masters in Clinical Psychology and Mental Health
Graduates of this course can pursue a diverse range of career options, whether in clinical psychology, other psychological professions or within the wider mental health or social care sector.
With a well-rounded introduction to working in clinical psychology and mental health – including an understanding of global models of healthcare and how to work across a diverse range of contexts – you'll develop knowledge and skills that are in high demand.
The aims to increase the number of NHS staff working in mental health, including training more psychological professionals, to meet demands for care. It is estimated that by 2037, two-thirds of the population aged over 65 will have multiple mental health conditions and a third of those will also have mental health needs. There are also growing numbers of children and young people requiring mental health support.
Psychological professions
If you want to become a clinical psychologist, this course will provide you with a strong foundation to build your knowledge and skills in this field. At Surrey, we offer a Clinical Psychology PsychD, which will provide you with comprehensive professional training comprising theory, research and clinical placements within the NHS. On completion of the course, you’ll have the requirements you need to register with the to work as a clinical psychologist.

- Counselling psychologist
- Counsellor
- Child and adult psychotherapist
- Family and systemic psychotherapist
- Mental health and wellbeing practitioner
- Psychological wellbeing practitioner.
To become a registered practitioner in any of these fields, you will need to complete an accredited professional postgraduate course to be eligible to practise and achieve qualified practitioner status.
Mental health and social care professions
Career pathways in the wider mental health or social care sector include:
- Art, drama or music therapist
- Community psychiatric nurse
- Community support and outreach worker
- Mental health nurse
- Occupational therapist
- Peer support worker
- Social worker.
Most of these roles will require further training to achieve qualified practitioner status.
