Assessing overcrowding in Nigerian schools
Overview
Overcrowding in Nigerian schools could adversely affect the learning processes and academic achievements of nearly 25m learners. Instead of relying on the teacher:pupil ratio normally used, this study employed satellite images to measure the footprint area of classroom buildings, which showed that 71 per cent of schools across 19 Nigerian states have less space per pupil than the accepted minimum of 1.2m2/pupil.
