I have found that the lecturers are very friendly, with keen interests in both their students' experiences and the subjects that they teach.
Entry year
2024What do you like about your course and why?
I find my course very interesting and useful due to the broad range of opportunities open to me both at university and as career options. I look forward to the prospect of choosing my own modules in the second and third years, allowing me to tailor my course to my own interests.
I have enjoyed the Professional Development for Accountants module. This is due to its uniqueness by focusing on the student as a whole, instead of the procedures and policies of the industry like the other modules do.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
Some key elements I enjoy most about Surrey is the diverse range of clubs and societies available to students; none is limited to a specific course of study. I am a member of LIT Soc, Surrey GameSoc and Surrey Business Society.
I also love the diverse range of eateries on campus - there definitely is something for everyone. Finally, I have found that the lecturers are very friendly, with keen interests in both their students' experiences and the subjects that they teach.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
When I graduate I plan on trying to finding a job in the finance industry, but I am not certain what aspect of finance I am most interested in yet. Based on research a financial analyst sounds interesting but also quite stressful. I may get an offer from wherever I end up working for my Professional Training placement. I think I will most likely try to find a placement and a job in the finance industry based on the modules that appeal to me the most.
What advice would you give new students?
Some advice that I would give to students considering studying accounting and finance is to attend as many classes as possible, read the news frequently focusing on the financial sector, and approach your first year with the same mentality as your second and third year. The more time spent in lessons the easier you will find both the work and approaching lecturers for help on particular topics.
Reading the news in the financial sector will boost your knowledge of the industry and gain you an advantage in job interviews by showing potential employers your ability to go beyond the tasks required of you.
If you start your degree with a strong foundation in first year it will be easier to continue into the second and third years which actually contribute to your degree.
