Course
Mathematics BSc (Hons)What do you like about your course and why?
I love that I feel challenged in my studies to broaden my knowledge and apply it to real life problems. My favourite thing about studying mathematics is how I can see so many different areas of the field whilst studying just one course. I am able to pick from a variety of modules that keep me interested and that build on knowledge from modules in previous semesters. I also like the amount of resources available to us to help understand the content. There are always exercises given to us to allow the opportunity of trying questions for yourself and learning how to answer them.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
I love playing sports and what I love about Surrey is the wide selection of sports on offer.
"I am women’s captain of our Ultimate Frisbee team and the opportunities we get to compete in BUCS games, regionals and nationals are amazing."
One of the highlights of my year is competing in varsity against Royal Holloway, it is an amazing day where every sport competes against each other. The atmosphere is amazing and the celebrations after are incredibly fun too.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
When I finish my degree I would love to travel the world, particularly South East Asia. I love exploring different countries and learning about their history and culture. I believe that travelling to different places in the world really helps to develop you as a person as you see different ways of living and learn an appreciation from different cultures. After that I want to train to become an accountant as I love working with numbers and think that it would be a great new experience for me.
What would be your advice to new students?
"I would advise students to prepare themselves to think differently from how you would have at A-level. Some modules require you to see things differently and introduce a new style of maths that isn’t really seen before university."
I think that maths is one of the most enjoyable courses though as it builds on the foundation you learn at A-level and brings new purposes to the knowledge you already have. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Every lecturer has office hours or can be reached by email to help explain a topic or question again. They are all so approachable and are more than willing to help you excel academically.
